MP pic

MiTio Alumni Mirrissa Purnell earned a free CEU course today by posting the following testimonial and picture:

“I am so grateful to have found Mitio! With their patient staff and instructor (Omar Castellon),  I was very prepared for my  NBCMI ( National Board of Certified Medical Interpreters Exam). I have already passed the written portion, and wait for the oral portion.  I have never felt unable to contact Dr. Lee for any reason, and she was always willing and patient in taking my calls.

If you are looking for a family atmosphere to learn the tenets of interpreting, I recommend Mitio to everyone!”

Interpretation Program Graduates Aid in Delivery of Culturally-Competent Patient Care

Congratulations to 89 WellStar team members from throughout the System on their becoming certified medical interpreters. The group, representing 11 foreign languages, was honored at a graduation ceremony held on Jan. 13, 2014, at the WellStar Development Center.

Training was provided by The Medical Interpreting and Translating Institute Online (MiTio), an online certificate/diploma program designed to provide persons with foreign language skills the opportunity to become skilled medical interpreters.

Guest speaker, Nelva Lee, Ph.D., president of MiTio, congratulated the graduates on their commitment to aiding in the delivery of quality, culturally-competent care to our patients and their families.

Courses offered by MiTio are accredited by the International Medical Interpretation Association (IMIA). In late 2012, the MiTio Foundation, a 501c3 charitable organization, partnered with MiTio to award WellStar Health System a scholarship to train upwards of 270 team members. This training helps WellStar comply with national Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards and Patient and Family Centered Care Standards, issued by The Joint Commission.

Also honored during the program were 34 team members who completed the WellStar Bridging the Gap (BTG) medical interpretation program.

In March 2010, the Cultural Competency Department implemented BTG, an in-house program designed to train bilingual team members with direct patient care responsibilities to serve as medical translators. BTG program graduates serve patients at all four of WellStar’s acute care hospitals, WellStar Medical Group offices and at WellStar Imaging Centers.

BTG is an ongoing program that is offered in March and September each year.

WellStar is committed to ensuring that all team members who provide medical information to patients are fully trained and capable of delivering health information to patients in a language they understand and in a manner that complies with best practice standards for patient centered culturally-competent care.
